Look Into My Eyes Ruby Redfort Lauren Child 9780007334063 Books
This is our THIRD purchase of this book!We found out about the series from a teacher friend- whose own daughters enjoyed them. (Purchase #1)
Loved it so much we bought a .1 cent "like new" copy for her classroom (#2)
Another for a cousin's BD who loves mystery/action books - who also loves it and is waiting to get book 2. (#3.)
The main character, Ruby Redfort, is a smart, sassy girl who is recruited as a "code cracker" into a secret spy organization. Her best friend, Clancy, is as loyal as can be, and her family/household staff are extremely devoted to her - and she to them. With Ruby being in middle school, there are a few other kids in the book. Minor characters but clearly defined.
My daughter is 11, in the 6th grade. She is a voracious reader. She's gone through Harry Potter a couple of times, The Fablehaven Seiries, The Beyonders, The various Rick Riordian adventures, The Leventhump Series and plenty of the classics along the way. The Ruby Redfort Series has been a delightfully bright spot in her reading journey. We both read the book. Both loved it! For MY part, I found myself laughing out loud at her wry wit and being very touched by the lessons she was learning on the way. My favorite things? The author has a strong, smart female in the lead here, using her brain and her wits to solve the problems that come her way. BUT - this isn't a book about a girl with heavy emotions or trials that lay ahead. It's about a really smart kid who thinks on her feet, making things up as she goes if needed. The fact that she's a girl doesn't really factor into the equation. (A good dose of Hermione Granger, mixed with Ferris Bueller, perhaps?) The other thing I like is the "timelessness" about it: The technology in the book comes from the spy organization. Seemingly regular items (like a toaster) have secret qualities. There are no smart phones or laptops around. Just Ruby, left with her wits and her friends to face the adventure that lies before her. In 5 years, the story won't sound dated. The really cool stuff - just like the movies - is saved for the spies.
This book is the first of the series. We have all the rest and are waiting for the last one to arrive from the UK.

This was a joy to read at the same time my ten-year-old grandson was reading it. I loved it. Couldn't put it down. I am really hoping there will be a third Ruby Redfort book. I gave this to my eleven year-old grand daughter and she was captivated as well.
My 13 year old daughter is an avid reader and I'm always looking out for great books she might like. This book was recommended to me by a teacher and did not disappoint. Thumbs up!
8 year old daughter is a major fan and can read these books in super quick fashion.
Nice storyline too, as well as a nicely produced book.
My 13 year old daughter read and reviewed this Ruby Redford's 'Look into My Eyes' is a really cool book but they use slang like 'gotta' and 'gonna' a lot which is a bit irritating. I would give four stars. Great story line and I cannot wait to read the next ones!
With cliffhangers keeping the pages turning, we enjoyed this book immensely. Clever and full of clean, fun suspense. Great for readers and a good read aloud for the younger ones even. Spoiler one death at the end of a bad guy by gunshot and much independent sleuthing without parental consent. )
The book is excellent- my 9 yr old loves it and is completely absorbed. The problem is the binding. All the pages are coming out once she passed page 100 and she is understandably frustrated. I tried to fix it but have so far taped 50 pages! Of course the return window has passed since the book wasn't opened until last week. Urgh. Perhaps try the hard copy.
Actually an awesome story, but completely let down by the binding - pages fell out every time we turned the page, leaving us with a pile of loose pages. Great for grade school kids, as well as parents who loved reading Lauren Child's wonderful Charlie & Lola books to their children when small.
I know reviews are meant to be on the book itself, but I also use them to determine which format to buy. Had I known the binding was so bad, I would happily have downloaded the version instead, as I shall do for the other books in this series. I'm, hoping others find this info useful, too.
